Travelling Healthy: My Go To Snacks
Last month, I spent some time in California and my mission while travelling was to stay healthy. When travelling, I tend to snack more and I know how easy it can be to grab a pack of salted nuts or go to a fast food joint and call it a day. However, those salted nuts won’t sustain you for very long and the high sodium content isn’t so friendly on the waistline. And that fast food? Well, I won’t even go there. So here are a few items I personally purchase and bring along with me at all times so I never feel tempted to grab something unhealthy.
First off, I want to say DRINK LOTS OF WATER. I find staying hydrated is my number one problem for me when travelling. When I’m constantly on the go, drinking enough water always seems to be the biggest task, so I always make sure to carry a 1l litre bottle of spring water with me OR coconut water is a good option too. Pure 100% coconut water is extremely nourishing for the body and keeps you hydrated longer. It’s best to find a coconut water with no added flavours or sugars. I found one by Trader Joe’s which was really tasty.
When I’m feeling the need for hydration but also a bit more sustainability, I always go for a greens juice. Usually a basic greens juice contains spinach, celery, apple, lemon and ginger. This is an excellent way to get your greens in as well as help you feel sustained throughout your travels. Luckily, green juices are becoming more available as I’ve seen many in grocery stores like Whole Foods and even Starbucks is starting to carry a variety of cold-pressed juices.
Raw almonds make for an excellent snack to carry with you at all times because of the high nutrients it contains. Whenever I’m feeling peckish, I grab a handful of almonds and instantly feel tied over until my next meal. You want to stick with raw and organic almonds as that is guaranteed full nutrition in each almond. I found a pack of raw almonds at Trader Joe’s and this big bag lasted me my entire trip (2 weeks).
Speaking of Trader Joe’s, I noticed they have an excellent selection of naturally dried fruit. I fell in love with the Chili Spiced Dried Mango. Of course it is better to consume fresh fruit, however dried fruit is a quick and easy go-to snack for a source of fiber and carbs for energy. Don’t over-indulge though, it is easy to load up on sugar and carbs this way that can later on be stored as fat.
I’m a chocoholic so leaving the house without chocolate is NOT an option. I used to be weary of eating lots of chocolate because of the dairy and fat content, until I found the holy grail brand of chocolate that is Giddy Yo Yo. They create the most delicious raw, organic dark chocolate. Yes I said raw! Yes I said organic! Their chocolate is actually FOOD not candy and is a fantastic travelling companion. Made with raw cacao, it is an excellent source of magnesium, iron, zinc and many other super nutrients to help you power through your travels.
I can go on and on about snacks because snacking is one of my favourite things to do but I’ll leave the recommendations here. These are just a few of my staple snack essentials for travel whether I’m walking around a city all day or in for a long drive.
